Redhill
Football Clubs was formed in the autumn of 1894, following
a meeting held by prominent local businessmen in the Warwick Hotel.
In fact, so great was the enthusiasm to bring senior football
to the town that the very first match albeit a "friendly"
againist Dorking was played on the original ground at Wiggie.
The result was a 2-2 draw. Two years later the club moved to
whats now the Memorial Park.
At first all matches were played on a friendly basis and was not
until 1898 that the club entered the South Suburban League The
club soon made its mark by winning the East & West Surrey
League in 1902/03 and 2 years later became runner-up in the Surrey
Senior Cup.In 1922 the club went into the London League and from
there progressed to the Athenian League, where they remained until
1984.In their 1st season they were runners-up and in the 1924/25
won the Athenian League Championship. In 1925/26 they enjoyed
their greatest season ever, reaching 2-cup finals and the semi
final of the F.A Amateur Cup, losing 7-1 to Northern Nomads before
a crowd of 17,000 at Highbury. In 1928 they won the Surrey Senior
Cup for the 1st time. The club had to wait until 1957/58 for
their next major achievement by reaching the 1st Round Proper
of the FA Cup, going out to Norwich at Carrow Road, 6-1. They
also won the Surrey Senoir Cup in 1965/67,the Athenian League
Cup (2).1970/71 & 71/72. The Floodlight Cup & the last
ever Athenian League title, in 1983/84. After eviction from the
Memorial Sports Ground, after 88 years, they moved to Kiln Brow,
& played in the London Spartan League finishing runners-up
on 2 occasions. Another change to the Sussex County League where
at present they are in Division 1 having gained promotion back
into Divison One in 1996/97. Last season saw the Reds at the bottom
this lead to the sacking of Manager Endsleigh.Ian Dawes was brought
back to the Club. They still finished 3rd from bottom but were
not relegated as Horsham were promoted. This season Ian Dwes was
sacked in October with the Reds second from bottom and Bob langford
was appointed the new manager.
